Evolution of the number of small sunspot groups of McIntosh types A or B (blue curve) and of large groups containing at least one large spot, i.e., types C, D, E and F (red curve) over cycles 22 and 23. Each group was counted once at its maximum development. While large groups appear in equal numbers over both cycles, the number of small groups drops by a factor >2 in cycle 23, in particular after 2000.
