Non-Gaussianity of distributions: if one assumes a Gaussian distribution (green curve) for themes and directly estimates the classifier parameters, a poor fit to the data results. Using a Gaussian mixture model fitted with the expectation-maximization algorithm, is a better fit to the data (orange curve).
