An example of the real-time model operating for the 8–9 September 2017 storm. The model treats data like it is in real time. The nowcast electric fields were plotted across Ireland at the top, with colour indicating the magnitude and the arrows indicating the direction on the left and the standard deviation error of the model on the right. A cubic interpolation is used to estimate the electric fields between impedance tensor sites. The horizontal (H) component of the Valentia magnetometer is on the bottom to illustrate the changing magnetic field. (An animation of the storm is attached in the Supplementary Materials.)
