3-D visualization of the (a) spherical and (b) spheroidal CME shapes. x′, y′, and z′ constitute a local coordinate system centered at the center of the CME. Dimensions are normalized to 1 for convenience. The spherical CME has circular cross-sections in the directions perpendicular to x′, y′, and z′, as shown by the 2-D shadow projections. The spheroidal CME has a circular cross-sections only in the direction perpendicular to the major axis (parallel to y′), while it has elliptical cross-sections in the directions perpendicular to the minor axes (parallel to x′ and y′), as shown by the 2-D shadow projections.
