Carrington-rotation (RMS) averages of the solar “Sun as a star” magnetic field observed by the Wilcox Solar Observatory together with three-rotation averages of the αα geomagnetic index, the interplanetary magnetic field strength in all-solar-wind flows (repeated in red in the lower three panels), and the field strength in CME-associated flows, corotating streams, and slow solar wind. Arrows indicate temporary depressions in all these parameters near solar maximum related to the “Gneveshev Gap”.
