The number of flares per GOES X-ray class and per solar cycle, before and after the removal of the 0.7 downscaling factor (“GOES old” and “GOES new”, respectively the upper and lower portion of the table). A 50% increase in the number of M-class and X-class events is obvious (respectively 55% and 52%). Solar cycles are from the 13-month smoothed monthly sunspot number minimum to the next minimum (Meeus, 1958), with the data from January to March 1976 added to SC21.
